Eclipse happened because of Rahu?

Candima Sutta (SN 2.9) and Suriya Sutta (SN 2.10) of the Samyutta Nikaya. In these two scriptures, the deities Canda and Suriya protect themselves from the attack of the eclipse deity Rahu by reciting short verses praising the Buddha and pleading for his protection:

"O Buddha, the Hero, thou art wholly free from all evil. My adoration to thee. I have fallen into distress. Be thou my refuge."

In these cases, the Buddha is shown as specifically hearing and responding to the paritta; he enjoins Rahu to release the captive deities rather than have his "head split into seven pieces".

It seems that these suttas had been influenced by ancient Indian folktale about eclipse caused by Rahu swallowing the moon or sun.

Saya pikir sutta2 ini "mengakomodasi" kepercayaan masyarakat tersebut dengan memasukkan elemen Buddhis ke dalamnya (yaitu hanya dengan berlindung kepada Buddha, dewa matahari/bulan dapat bebas dari Rahu,yang menunjukkan bahwa Buddha-lah yang tertinggi). Ini juga sifat Buddhisme awal yg dapat menerima kepercayaan masyarakat setempat dengan menyesuaikannya dengan Buddha Dhamma. Contoh lain yg terkenal juga adalah kisah pertikaian antara para asura & para dewa (yang dipimpin oleh Sakka) yang tampaknya dipengaruhi kisah yg serupa tetapi tidak sama dalam mitologi Hindu.

When Rahu sees the sun and moon shining brightly, he becomes jealous and enters their orbital paths, where he stands with mouth agape. It then seems as if the lunar and solar mansions have been plunged into the great hell, and the devas in those mansions all cry out simultaneously in terror. While Rahu can cover the mansions with his hand, jaw, and tongue, and can even stuff his cheeks with them, he is unable to obstruct their motion. If he did make such an attempt they would split his head and come through the other side or pull him along and push him down [Spk-pt: because their motion is determined by the law of kamma and is extremely hard for anyone to stop directly].

In Hindu mythology, Rahu is a snake that swallows the sun or the moon causing eclipses. He is depicted in art as a dragon with no body riding a chariot drawn by eight black horses. Rahu is one of the navagrahas (nine planets) in Vedic astrology. The Rahu kala is considered inauspicious.
According to legend, during the Samudra manthan, the asura Rahu drank some of the divine nectar. But before the nectar could pass his throat, Mohini (the female avatar of Vishnu) cut off his head. The head, however, remained immortal. It is believed that this immortal head occasionally swallows the sun or the moon, causing eclipses. Then, the sun or moon passes through the opening at the neck, ending the eclipse.
