Japan battles to stave off possible nuclear meltdown

Workers are battling to stave off a possible nuclear meltdown at a plant in north-eastern Japan as the country struggles with the aftermath of Friday's enormous earthquake and tsunami.

Japanese media said officials had detected caesium, one of the elements released when overheating causes core damage, around the reactor at Fukushima No 1 plant in Futuba, 150 miles (240km) north of Tokyo.

The Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco) said it did not believe a meltdown was under way, but Ryohei Shiomi, an official with Japan's nuclear safety commission, said that it was possible.

Experts and authorities played down the dangers of a Chernobyl-style disaster, saying they believed a partial meltdown was controllable. The government urged people to remain calm.

Officials had earlier evacuated 20,000 residents living within 6 miles of the plant on the orders of the prime minister, Naoto Kan, who had inspected it via helicopter. Experts told Associated Press that the risk area was 4 miles.

The crisis began when the 8.9 magnitude shock cut off power, turning off the water supply needed to cool the system. The tsunami is thought to have cut off the backup diesel generator an hour later, leading to pressure rising rapidly within the reactor.

Fukushima nuclear plant blast puts Japan on high alert

• Warnings of possible meltdown amid radiation leaks
• Tens of thousands evacuated after plant explosion
• Up to 1,300 killed in earthquake and tsunami

Japan is battling to stave off a nuclear disaster after an explosion at a north-eastern nuclear plant in the wake of the enormous earthquake and tsunami.

Authorities are evacuating tens of thousands of residents living within a 12 mile (20km) radius of the Fukushima Daiichi plant and those within 6 miles of a second installation in Futuba, 150 miles north of Tokyo.

The explosion followed warnings of a possible meltdown after problems with the cooling system and confirmation of a radiation leak at Fukushima No 1 plant. But nuclear safety officials said it was unlikely the reactor had suffered serious damage, according to the Kyodo news agency.

It is feared that 1,300 people died in Friday's double disaster, most being killed as the wall of mud and water engulfed buildings, roads and vehicles, Japanese media reported. But the priority now is to tackle the crisis at the power plant.

Kyodo cited an official who said that the rate of hourly radiation leaking from Fukushima was equal to the amount usually permitted in a year.

Authorities had previously heralded a successful release of radioactive gases to reduce pressure inside the reactor, which might account for the high levels.

"We are now trying to analyse what is behind the explosion," said the chief cabinet secretary, Yukio Edano. "We ask everyone to take action to secure safety."

Television footage showed the walls of one building had crumbled, leaving only its metal frame, but it was not clear whether it housed the reactor.

The International Atomic Energy Agency said Japanese authorities also reported a fire at the Onagawa nuclear plant. The fire has been extinguished.

Fears over third Japan nuclear reactor

14 March 2011 Last updated at 06:55 GMT

Officials in Japan are warning that a third reactor is suffering cooling problems at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant raising fears of another explosion.

So far two reactors have suffered hydrogen blasts since Friday's devastating earthquake and tsunami.

Now Japanese media are reporting that fuel rods are partly exposed in the third reactor.

However the government says the risk of an uncontrolled leak of radiation is low.

About 2,000 bodies are reported to have been found on Monday in two coastal districts of the Miyagi region.

Mike Wooldridge reports.

"Kami terus memantau radiasi, tetapi semua masih di bawah kendali,"papar Edano. Sedikitnya 160 orang telah melakukan tes radiasi kemarin. Tes dilaksanakan beberapa jam setelah ribuan warga diungsikan dari kawasan fasilitas nuklir Fukushima. Berdasar keterangan Badan Keselamatan Industri dan Nuklir Jepang (NISA),seorang pengungsi diketahui terkena radiasi sebesar 100.000 cpm (cost per mille),level yang mengharuskan seseorang didekontaminasi dari zat radioaktif.

Kyodo reported that the fuel rods at one reactor were now three metres above the water, and that a radiation leak believed to be from the reactor itself had now reached levels above the legal limit.

Japan's ambassador to the US Ichiro Fujisaki told CNN: "There was a partial melt of a fuel rod, melting of fuel rod. There was a part of that ... but it was nothing like a whole reactor melting down."

Onagawa nuclear plant juga mengalami kebocoran radiasi

High radiation at second Japan nuclear plant

Excessive levels of radiation at a second Japanese nuclear facility at Onagawa after Friday's earthquake have led authorities to report a state of emergency, the UN nuclear agency said.

"Japanese authorities have informed the IAEA that the first or lowest state of emergency at the Onagawa nuclear power plant has been reported by Tohoku Electric Power Company," the International Atomic Energy Agency said.

The alert was declared "as a consequence of radioactivity readings exceeding allowed levels in the area surrounding the plant.

"Japanese authorities are investigating the source of radiation."

Part of a reactor at Japan's ageing Fukushima No 1 atomic plant blew up on Saturday, a day after the biggest quake ever recorded in Japan unleashed a 10-metre tsunami on the country.

Tokyo (270km dari fukushima) hari ini mengalami kenaikan radiasi

QuoteTOKYO (Kyodo)--Radiation levels shot up in Tokyo and its vicinity Tuesday following the nuclear accident at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant in northeastern Japan that was triggered by last week's massive earthquake and subsequent tsunami, local governments said.

QuoteNortherly winds brought radioactive substances from Fukushima Prefecture to Tokyo and its vicinity, nuclear experts said.

"WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON"

Japanese media have became more critical of Kan's handling of the disaster and criticized the government and nuclear plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) for its failure to provide enough information on the incident.

Kan himself lambasted the operator for taking so long to inform his office about one of the blasts, demanding to know "what the hell is going on?," Kyodo reported.

Kyodo said Kan had ordered TEPCO not to pull employees out of the plant.

"The TV reported an explosion. But nothing was said to the premier's office for about an hour," a Kyodo reporter quoted Kan telling power company executives.

Lam Ching-wan, a chemical pathologist at the University of Hong Kong, said the blasts could expose the population to longer-term exposure to radiation, which can raise the risk of thyroid and bone cancers and leukemia. Children and fetuses are especially vulnerable, he said.

"Very acute radiation, like that which happened in Chernobyl and to the Japanese workers at the nuclear power station, is unlikely for the population," he said.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano, talking of levels of radiation at the Fukushima Daiichi plant's No. 4 reactor, said: "There is definitely a possibility that this could affect people's bodies."

There have been a total of four explosions at the plant since it was damaged in last Friday's massive quake and tsunami. The most recent were blasts at reactors No. 2 and No. 4.
