Komputer Rp 400 Ribu, Kecil Bagai Colokan Listrik

Jakarta - Perusahaan yang didirikan orang Indonesia, Marvell Technology Group, telah mengembangkan sebuah komputer dengan harga yang akan mencapai sekitar Rp 400.000 per unit. Komputer ini memiliki ukuran kecil bagaikan colokan listrik.

Komputer dengan nama Plug Computer itu memiliki ukuran seperti colokan listrik, kurang lebih hanya satu genggaman tangan. Namun kemampuannya tak bisa diremehkan begitu saja.

Sehat Sutardja, CEO dan pendiri Marvell, seperti dikutip detikINET dari NYTimes, Senin (25/5/2009), mengatakan Plug Computer itu dikembangkan dengan prosesor buatan Marvell. Memang perangkat itu tidak dilengkapi dengan layar, namun ia bisa disambungkan dengan kabel Ethernet ke jaringan lokal dan internet.

Selain itu, Plug Computer memiliki port USB untuk dipasangkan dengan perangkat eksternal lain, mulai dari hardisk hingga kamera. Sistem operasi yang digunakan adalah salah satu versi dari Linux.

Perangkat itu dibanderol pada harga USD 99 dengan development kit-nya. Namun NYTimes memperkirakan dalam waktu dua tahun perangkat itu akan turun harga hingga USD 40 atau sekitar Rp 400.000.

Sutardja mengatakan, nantinya Plug Computer ini mungkin tak akan nampak sebagai satu produk tersendiri. "Nantinya, Anda tak akan melihat plug ini. Kami ingin perangkat ini ada di TV, stereo system dan pemutar DVD," ujar pria yang hijrah dari Indonesia untuk kemudian mendirikan Marvell di Amerika Serikat.

Marvell adalah perusahaan semikonduktor yang cukup ternama di pasaran. Produk-produknya digunakan di kurang lebih 50 persen prosesor hardisk di pasaran, belum lagi chip Marvell yang banyak tertanam dalam ponsel.

Pada 2006 perusahaan ini menarik perhatian karena membeli salah satu divisi dari Intel, tepatnya Divisi Xscale Processor dari raksasa mikroprosesor tersebut. Perusahaan ini didirikan pada tahun 1995 di Santa Clara, California, Amerika Serikat, dua dari tiga pendirinya adalah pria kelahiran Indonesia: Sehat Sutardja dan Pantas Sutardja. ( wsh / ash )

A Plug Computer is small enough to plug directly into a wall socket and is designed to draw so little power that it can be left on all of the time. Unlike other embedded devices in the home, it contains a gigahertz class processor to offer PC class performance. This makes it a viable alternative to a PC for any software service.

"There is no doubt that home networks need to become more intelligent and easier to use by offering value added services for the consumer," said Dr. Simon Milner, Vice President and General Manager of the Enterprise Business Unit, Consumer and Communications Business Group at Marvell Semiconductor. "We have created an open computing platform for developers in a consumer and eco-friendly form factor. Marvell's goal is to accelerate the development and availability of innovative software and services in the home."

The SheevaPlug development platform uses a Marvell Kirkwood processor based on an embedded 1.2GHz Sheeva™ CPU equipped with 512 Mbytes of FLASH and 512 Mbytes of DRAM. Connection to the home network is via Gigabit Ethernet. Peripherals such as direct attached storage can be connected using a USB 2.0 port.

Multiple standard Linux 2.6 kernel distributions are supported on the SheevaPlug development platform enabling rapid application development. The enclosure is designed to plug directly into a standard wall socket and is designed to draw less than one tenth of the power of a typical PC being used as a home server.

"Plug computing is a logical evolution for the digital home in the same way enterprise applications moved from servers to network appliances," Mr. Hajime Nakai, Director, Member of the Board, BUFFALO INC. "Marvell is probably the only company that can pack so much processor performance into such a compact form factor."

the Marvell Qdeo chip. This is a video decoder chip that is able to apply "clean up" algorthms to upconvert video to 1080p. One product was showing a movie stored on an iPod upscaled to 1080p, and it looked really, really good. Another took a normal DVD and upscaled it, removing all sorts of conpression artifacts and aliasing problems in the process. LG has a blu-ray player using the chip that cleans up blu-ray signals so they look even better at 1080p. Etc.
