http://gizmodo.com/calico-google-s-ambitious-new-project-to-stop-illness-1341933412

Google just announced its most recent plan in a long list of crazy moonshots. This one isn't self-driving cars or internet in the sky, instead it's a company called Calico that's going to try and put an end to aging and disease.

There aren't too many details about exactly how Calico will go about its business, but the plan is to make long-term bets that healthcare companies are generally pretty slow about. Calico will be run by Arthur D. Levinson, Chairman and former CEO of Genentech and Chairman of Apple, but he's not giving up his day job.

Larry Page summed up the project this way in a statement:

Illness and aging affect all our families. With some longer term, moonshot thinking around healthcare and biotechnology, I believe we can improve millions of lives. It’s impossible to imagine anyone better than Art—one of the leading scientists, entrepreneurs and CEOs of our generation—to take this new venture forward.

This project has a lot less to do with Google's specific technical chops than the vast majority of Google's other moonshot projects. But Google does have scads of cash, which will be its main contribution. It seems that Calico will operate mostly on its own, and big money for an ambitious, independent project seems like as good a recipe for success as any.

Naturally it'll be a long time before we see this pay off in any way. Here's to hoping we get to see some results in a short decade or two. You know, before it's too late for us

Google announces Calico, a new company focused on health and well-being
MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA – September 18, 2013 – Google today announced Calico, a new company that will focus on health and well-being, in particular the challenge of aging and associated diseases. Arthur D. Levinson, Chairman and former CEO of Genentech and Chairman of Apple, will be Chief Executive Officer and a founding investor.

Announcing this new investment, Larry Page, Google CEO said: “Illness and aging affect all our families. With some longer term, moonshot thinking around healthcare and biotechnology, I believe we can improve millions of lives. It’s impossible to imagine anyone better than Art—one of the leading scientists, entrepreneurs and CEOs of our generation—to take this new venture forward.” Art said: “I’ve devoted much of my life to science and technology, with the goal of improving human health. Larry’s focus on outsized improvements has inspired me, and I’m tremendously excited about what’s next.”

Art Levinson will remain Chairman of Genentech and a director of Hoffmann-La Roche, as well as Chairman of Apple.

Commenting on Art’s new role, Franz Humer, Chairman of Hoffmann-La Roche, said: “Art’s track record at Genentech has been exemplary, and we see an interesting potential for our companies to work together going forward. We’re delighted he’ll stay on our board.”

Tim Cook, Chief Executive Officer of Apple, said: “For too many of our friends and family, life has been cut short or the quality of their life is too often lacking. Art is one of the crazy ones who thinks it doesn’t have to be this way. There is no one better suited to lead this mission and I am excited to see the results.”

Personality / Study finds a messy environment can make us more creative
« on: 19 September 2013, 03:52:40 PM »
Researchers in Minnesota have discovered that a clean, orderly environment leads to conventional
behavior. They found that the opposite, a messy environment, leads to more unconventional choices and more creativity.

Kathleen D. Vohs, a professor of marketing in the School of Management at the University of Minnesota, conducted a series of three experiments with colleagues Joseph P. Redden and Ryan Rahinel on clean and messy environments.

"Experiment 1 showed that relative to participants in a disorderly room participants in an orderly room chose healthier snacks and donated more money," the three write in their summary.
"Experiment 2
showed that participants in a disorderly room were more creative than participants in an orderly room.

"Experiment 3," they write. "Showed a predicted crossover effect: Participants in an orderly room preferred an option labeled as classic, but those in a disorderly room preferred an option labeled as new."

Researchers finds creativity likes a mess

They titled their research Physical Order Produces Healthy Choices, Generosity, and Conventionality, Whereas Disorder Produces Creativity and say their findings suggest more of "a nuanced story of how different environments suit different outcomes" than has been thought to
be the case.

Vohs wrote in Friday's New York Times that their findings could have practical applications. She says, for example, that it could be a teaching tool for employers, noting that a minimalist movement is afoot in today's offices, smaller spaces and more of a conventional, clean environment surrounding workers.

"At the same time," Vohs notes. "The working world is abuzz about cultivating innovation and creativity, endeavors that our findings suggest might be hampered by the minimalist movement. While
cleaning up certainly has its benefits, clean spaces might be too conventional to let inspiration flow."

So mess up your space and prepare to do your most creative work ever.

The way you present yourself can have a profound effect on the way you act. A little effort put into your clothing can make you think a certain way and have a positive—or negative—impact on your
performance.

David McRaney, author of You Are Now Less Dumb, points to a study that demonstrates how we act differently based on what we wear —or even what we think we're wearing. In the study, participants.dressed in everyday clothing but half of them wore lab coats. The people in lab coats made far fewer mistakes than those without. In another
experiment, both halves were given lab coats but one half were told they were actually paint smocks. Again, the people with lab coats outperformed those in the "paint smocks." The findings pointed to a
simple conclusion: when we dress.smart we think we are smart. If we don't, we become more error-prone.

While certainly not the only factor that determines how we think about ourselves and approach our work, don't think your clothing has no impact on your performance.

This drama is based on 1999-2000 MBC drama series “Hur Jun” .
Because of the similarities between the two main characters of the show, “Hur Jun” has often been called as male version of “Dae Jang Geum”.

The story is set in Joseon Korea, primarily during the reign of Seonjo.
The story covers a time that is approximately 50 years after the death of Dae Jang Geum (the reputed first female doctor of Joseon Korea). It depicts the dramatic life of historical figure Heo Joon who wrote the oriental medical textbook
“Donguibogam” and became physician for King Seonjo. Kim Joo Hyuk will plays Heo Joon in this drama.

The title literally means “Mirror of Eastern Medicine”. The book is regarded important in traditional Korean medicine and one of the classics of Oriental medicine today.

The original edition of Dongui Bogam is currently preserved by the Korean National Library.  It is expected to be translated in English by 2013. [3] The original was written in Chinese alphabet and only part of it was transcribed in Korean for wide nursery use, as only officials understood Chinese.

http://lifehacker.com/the-complete-guide-to-making-money-in-your-spare-time-1291903155

We all could do with a few extra dollars in our pocket, but unless your boss is a fan of giving you free money, you'll probably have to work for it. Thankfully, you can do a lot of that work in your spare time. Here are some of the best ways to make some extra money, ranging from the super-lazy to the intensely-engaged.

To be fair, the amount of money you’ll make from a side gig depends on your skills and time commitment. Maybe you’re just looking for some extra spending money, or maybe you have a specific goal. Here are some options, sorted by how much effort you want to put in.

    Low-Effort, Passive Techniques
    Moderate Effort, After-Work and Weekends
    Significant Effort, Skill-Based, Scheduled Activities
Techniques that Require Dedication or Regular Attention

It's blood plasma, not whole blood. They "buy" it because they use it to manufacture medicines, and need huge amounts to do that.

It takes something like 10 plasma donations to make a single dose of most medicine, so part of the reason they pay is to help generate the sheer volumes of plasma they need.

http://gizmodo.com/the-secret-to-weight-loss-might-be-poop-transplants-fro-1265888152/1269579562

As unlikely as it might seem, fecal transplants are actually turning out to be the stuff
dreams are made of. And apparently, this magical poop procedure still has plenty to
give. After some successful rounds of experimenting, scientists now believe that the
answer to the rampant obesity problem could very well be lying in thin people's feces.

The study, which comes from a team of scientists at Washington University School of
Medicine, builds upon an already sizable body of work that indicates microbes play a
big role in managing your body's weight. In the test, four sets of twins—one obese, the
other not—gave the doctors feces samples just teeming with all the lovely, intestine-
dwelling microbes you could hope for. The scientists then transplanted the samples into
mice bred to have no gut microbes of their own and found that the samples of thin
lady poop made the mice maintain a healthy weight, while the obese twins' defecatory
goodies made the mice gain weight.

After performing further tests, the researchers were able to pinpoint one particular
type of feces-dwelling bug that was far more abundant in the slim women—a microbe
called Bacteroides. That's what was helping the thin mice stay thin.

Called “ATLAS,” the robot is designed to travel across rough terrain, use human tools and climb using its
hands and feet. DARPA — formally known as the U.S. Defense Department Defense Advanced Research
Projects Agency — is currently challenging teams to create new software for the 6-foot-tall robot’s brain.
Is the ATLAS robot cool tech, or a sign of impending robot overlords?
