After the successful release of three seasons of Avatar: The Last Airbender (Legend of Aang), Nickelodeon announced that there will be a new spinoff series next year (2011). It is not yet official but the Avatar creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino said that the working title is “Avatar: Legend of Korra.” The wonderful and funny life of Aang will be replaced by a more mature life of Korra.
The creators came up an idea of changing the sex of the protagonist because the creators wanted to try something different. The character, Korra, was partly inspired by Avatar Kyoshi of the original series which was a popular character with a lot of fans.
The new series takes place 70 years later after Aang died. Some would question why Aang died around age of 70, which is too young for an Avatar to die, the creators said that since Aang had been frozen in ice with Appa, for about 100 years, he kind of burned up some of extra Avatar time. Aang and Katara’s grandchild Korra will continue the legacy of an Avatar. Korra knows how to bend earth, water, and fire. Most likely, the story will focus on how she will be able to learn airbending and she will be guided by her father named Tenzin. Most probably since Aang is an airbender, Korra is a waterbender.
According to an interview made by Wall Street Journal, DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko said that the new series will still have the same sense of fun and adventure. It is not yet confirmed how many episodes it will have but most likely, it’ll depend a lot on the audience.
Other speculations: The complete information of the new Avatar series will be updated here soon. We just hope that Korra will be funny like Aang and the story should not be so serious. The creators cannot give the entire details of the next series so there are many speculations and rumors on what will happen next.
