Let's "blog" together
« on: 22 June 2010, 09:46:39 PM »
Very often I come across something interesting, and wish that I could write it down right away. If only those everyday "pearls" could stay in mind forever, unfortunately I am very forgetful.
So I am thinking of starting a mini "blog", maybe even smaller than micro-blog twitter, we can all fill it up together.

(Of course, I might end up to be the only one who is writing here, talking to myself  ;D - it's okey, risk taken)

Hence my first post.

Today I browsed old posts on Forum Tanya Jawab Samaggi-Phala. Bhante Uttamo's answers are amazingly wonderful! Found so many priceless "pearls", but this one pearl stood out because somehow it struck directly into my heart.

Asker:
What is the key of Dhamma teaching that if hold onto can help us to solve every problem?

Bhante Uttamo:
ACCEPT THE REALITY as how it is that life is full of changes.
Find THE REASON of the reality we are facing, both pleasant reality or upsetting reality.
Do more of the reasons to our having those pleasant realities. Cut off the reasons of the upsetting reality.
Then, all problems can be solved.
Happiness will be yours for long.

[Original text:]

Apa kunci ajaran Dhamma yang bila kita pegang terus dalam kehidupan mampu melewati semua masalah?

Jawaban:
Salam metta,
B. Uttamo

Hi, truthfully i've found this story since may, several days before Vesakh Day. This is "pearl" that help me to think about kusala and akusala kamma. I picked this from The Debate of King Millinda chapter 15, #73. (full version can be read in http://www.buddhanet.net/pdf_file/milinda.pdf )

73. The Power of Evil
“Which is more powerful, wholesomeness or unwholesomeness?”

“Wholesomeness is more powerful, O king.”

“That is something I cannot believe, for those who do evil often experience the result of their deeds in this very life when they are punished for their crimes, but is there anyone who, by offering alms to the Order or by observing the Uposatha has received the benefit in this very life?”

“There are, O king, six  such cases. The slave Puõõaka, on giving a meal to Sàriputta, attained on the same day to the dignity of a treasurer. Then there was the mother of Gopàla, who sold her hair and therewith gave a meal to Mahà Kaccàyana and as a result became the chief queen of King Udena. The pious woman Suppiyà, who cut flesh from her own thigh to provide meat for a sick monk
but on the very next day the wound healed. Mallikà, when a slave girl, gave her own gruel to the Blessed One and became, that very day, the chief queen of Kosala. Sumana the florist, who resented eight bunches of jasmine to the Blessed One, came into great prosperity and Ekasàñaka the
Brahman who gave the Blessed One his only garment and received that day the gift of ‘All the Eights’.”

“So then, Nàgasena, for all your searching have you
found only six cases?”

“That is so, O king.”

“Then it is unwholesomeness that is more powerful than wholesomeness. For I have seen many men impaled on a stake for their crimes, and in the war waged by the general Bhaddasàla in the service of the Nanda royal family against Chandagutta there were eighty Corpse Dances, for
they say that when a great slaughter has taken place the headless corpses rise and dance over the battle-field. All of those men came to destruction through the fruit of their evil deeds. Yet when King Pasenadi of Kosala gave the unparalleled alms-giving did he receive wealth or glory or happiness
in the same life?”

“No, O king, he did not.”

“Then surely, Nàgasena, unwholesomeness is more powerful?”

“Just, O king, as an inferior grain ripens in a month or two but the best grain ripens only after five or six months, good deeds ripen only after a long time. Furthermore, O king, the results of both good and evil will be experienced in a future life, but because evil is blameworthy it has been
decreed that those who do evil will be punished by the law, yet they do not reward those who do good. If they were to make a law to reward the good doer then good deeds
would also be rewarded in this very life.”

“Very good, Nàgasena, only by one as wise as you could this puzzle be so well solved. The question put by me from the ordinary viewpoint has been made clear by you in the supramundane sense.”

versi indonesia

73. Kekuatan Kejahatan

I attended a workshop at an employment agency. There was a lady who has been working at a pharmaceutical company for like 20-30 years, yet she was being made redundant in October. She was not upset though, she said "My job is being moved overseas, someone there is going to start a new job, while I lose mine. But I am fine with it, because the guys up there who made the decision don't know me at all. It's nothing personal." Then she smiled.

I remembered on my first workshop at the same agency, there were about a dozen people there. All of us had been made redundant. The consultant started by asking how we felt. Words like "depressed", "upset", "angry", "unfair" etc flew out of our mouths. So different from how that lady felt.

In his book "Who Ordered This Truckload of Dung?", Ajahn Brahm has a story. When we are depressed, we often say "It's not fair! Why me?". We feel that we've been treated unjustly without any reason.

There was a prisoner approached Ajahn Brahm and confided to him "Brahm, I wanted to tell you that I didn't commit the crime for which I was locked up in this jail. I was innocent..." Ajahn Brahm believed him and began to think how unfair this was, and wondered how he could mend this terrible injustice. But then the prisoner interrupted his thoughts.

With a mischievous grin, he said, "But Brahm, there were so many other crimes where I wasn't caught that I guess it is fair!".

I love this story. Next time I feel injustice and think "Why me?", I will remember this story. There are a lot of upsetting things happened to me, but on the other hands there are many times I had made other people upset but I got away with those. So it is fair in the end!

When upsetting things happen to me, that surely is my bad kamma ripens.
But when I get away with doing bad things, does it mean my good kamma ripens?

Good kamma ripens slower than bad kamma. Can my good kamma cancel the bad kamma out?
Or kamma doesn't work that way??

 [at] Tania,
as a new comer u started with a nice step. continue it sis, ur posting abt milinda panha so nice, unfortunately i couldnt send u a GRP, as ur reputation, we hv to wait 720 hours, hehehe...

i also interested with this,

Good kamma ripens slower than bad kamma. Can my good kamma cancel the bad kamma out? Or kamma doesn't work that way??[/color]

i love this posting, because i also thinking about that. how i can cancel my bad kamma, at least make it delay to ripens. as we know the vipaka will ripens according the condition, when the condition in the time to ripens then come out the results.

abt good and bad kamma will ripens faster the bad one than the good one, according in my experiences, i got many experiences both of them are same fast will got the results. when i do dana, eventhough few only, then whole day my bus fare are free, but when i did bad things suddenly soon i got the results. im so surprised which i never got it before, now im realized, bad and good will soon got the results, makes me to have to sati anytime.

may all beings be happy

[at] Pannadevi,
Hi Pannadevi, nice to meet you ..  :)
could you tell me what GRP is? and how to increase reputation?

i dont really know about ripe of good and bad karma, i didn't learn abhidhamma as well, to hard for me, but i always think that, Good karma cant canceled the ripens of bad karma, it just can minimize bad karma's effect .. as in Millinda Panha, there are only 6 cases that people who do uposatha for Sangha and received the benefits in same life time.

so sorry, it's already night and i dont have time to translate it in english, this is link (http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fdhammacitta.org%2Fforum%2Findex.php%2Ftopic%2C14781.0.html&h=fd0a0UyG6IqBrahKZN6vCEkCVFg) about how good karma can minimize bad karma's effect. I've read whole thread, in that story Luang Po who is already reached Abhinna, could know about his bad karma that would riped in short time, so he could made some preparation and help people near him to safe (although its according to their karma too).

About dana that you've done and you'd got "something" as the result in short time, i think it because dana you've done before (i cant tell you when). Dana you've did in this life is just a trigger that help it ripens, besides it will ripe in future.

correct me if i'm wrong,
