Kafe Jongkok / Christian the lion - Full ending
« on: 08 April 2011, 09:13:38 PM »

In 1969 a young Australian, John Rendall and his friend Ace Bourke, bought a small lion cub from Harrods pet department, which was then legal. 'Christian' was kept in the basement of a furniture shop on the Kings Road in Chelsea, the heart of the swinging sixties. Loved by all, the affectionate cub ate in a local restaurant, played in a nearby graveyard, but was growing fast...

A chance encounter with Bill Travers and Virginia McKenna led to a new life for Christian. He came to live in a huge enclosure and to sleep in a caravan at their Surrey home. Then in 1971 he was flown to Kenya, his ancestral home, and returned to the wild by lion-man George Adamson. Nine months later in 1972, John and Ace returned to Kora in Kenya. This clip is of their reunion at that time.

It was an emotional reunion: "He ran towards us, threw himself onto us, knocked us over and hugged us, with his paws on our shoulders."

John Rendall

Christian's story. Directed by Bill Travers, commentary by Virgina McKenna, founders of the Born Free Foundation.

Lingkungan / Candi Borobudur Raih Penghargaan
« on: 24 March 2011, 08:48:54 AM »
Jakarta, Kompas - PT Taman Wisata Candi Borobudur, Prambanan, dan Ratu Boko (Persero) memenangi kompetisi internasional dan meraih penghargaan kategori ”Heritage” dari PATA Gold Awards tahun 2011. Tata kelola PT TWC dinilai baik.

(LUK)

Two of our best, Tommy Lee Jones and Samuel L. Jackson, are paired in unusual circumstance and through probing conversation; the two men lay out their concerns, beliefs and doubts, each contemplating the other's stance, and if their own ideas perhaps need revision, or not.

The only thing limited about HBO's television movie The Sunset Limited is the setting. OK, I guess the costumes are, too. The entire hour and a half takes place in a sparse, single room of a small apartment in New York City. Two characters, listed merely in the credits as White and Black, discuss god and existence, as well as Black's stint in prison and White's empty life. It's one continuous conversation, with no act breaks or time jumps.

But how fascinating! Apparently, just before the story begins, Black has rescued White from a suicide attempt. Black is keeping White talking in his apartment, presumably so that White doesn't try again. As such, there is a subtext under laying everything that is going on. But that isn't nearly as neat as the actual words being said. Black talks a lot more than White, but they get into stuff such as books, including the Bible, and the afterlife, that are just plain gripping. I haven't seen a show that is so intense with such little action since In Treatment.

Samuel L. Jackson plays Black, and Tommy Lee Jones plays White. Besides the writer, they can take much credit for the success of the piece. Both show their chops, conveying a lot with just a little. They also makes the characters seem real and effortless. Not once during the show did anything they do take me out of the moment. I had to stop and remind myself that these were just two characters in the hands of veteran actors. They were both so authentic, really bringing to life the two distinct points of view.

A major component of the movie, taken from a play, is religion. Black is a devout Christian, converted during his time in prison serving a murder sentence. He lives a simple life devoted to . White is an intellectual aethist, shaped that way by his pursuit of academia (he is a college professor). But both are smart, and open to hearing the other, even though neither will be convinced of the other's opinions. Nor do either one descend into stereotype. They hold personally chosen values, not ones spouted by a religious leader that they embraced. Jackson and Jones make you believe what their characters believe, and neither viewpoint comes out looking better than the other.

I expect awards will be heaped upon The Sunset Limited, and deservedly so. I will be surprised if it isn't recognized. Just for the sheer drama of the debate, it deserves it. Check out The Sunset Limited during one of its many repeats on HBO in the cominc weeks.

Film / Hollywood Stop Edarkan Produksi Filmnya ke Indonesia
« on: 18 February 2011, 09:35:44 PM »

Menurut Masardi aksi mereka dilatarbelakangi kebijakan pemerintah Indonesia melalui Direktorat Jenderal Bea Cukai yang memberlakukan beban bea masuk atas hak distrimusi film impor.

Gadget dan Toys / Some Amazing Futuristic Laptop and Netbook Designs.
« on: 10 February 2011, 09:07:34 PM »
The technology world is always exciting and unpredictable.

It changes all the time. You never know what technology
will be there in the next 5, 2, or even the next year.

30 years ago, nobody thought that everyone would need a
personal computer. 20 years ago, our parents would never
dream of a small, portable PC that we call laptop nowadays.

Over time, thousands of models of laptops of all sizes have
been introduced, but nobody knows what else is to come.

The best we can do is to take a look into the future with
some most amazing laptop and netbook concepts.

Rolltop

Orkin Design has introduced a full touch screen laptop
concept, called Rolltop, which can be rolled up like a
newspaper when you need to carry it around and stretched
into a super screen when you want to play a video game.
As light as a mini notebook, Rolltop provides a 13″ screen
when used as a laptop and 17″ screen when used as a
monitor. It comes with a multi media integrated pen and
even a holding belt.

Nokia’s Scroll OLED Laptop

Another member of the “scroll” family, Nokia’s scroll OLED laptop concept
was conceived by Rodrigo Mercado with distinctive entertainment functions.
The laptop’s extremely colorful images, wide viewing angle, low power
and high contrast ratio make it perfect for watching movies.
It also integrates voice activation technology.

iWeb 2.0

Together with the diminishing size of laptop, the keyboard also gets smaller and smaller
to such an extend that it’s impossible to use without an accompanying wireless keyboard.
Yang Yongchang’s iWeb 2.0 concept solves the problem. It comes with a full keyboard
which can be folded into 3 to comfortably fit with the 6.5’ screen.
iWeb 2.0 also supports multi-touch, gravity sensing technologies together with other
utopian features.

Dell’s Eco-Friendly Froot

It’s hard to say if Dell’s Froot concept is a PC or a laptop
or whatever. Designer Paulina Carlos has made a bold leap
to introduce a computer without either a monitor or a
keyboard. Using laser technology, the concept is able to
project these missing parts on any flat surface. Made of
starch-based polymer with a biodegradable skin, even the
electronic components can be recycled.

Transparent Laptop

Even though this see-through laptop looks pretty cool when
you want to show off with your girlfriend, I still have
trouble understanding why I actually need it. The
OLED-powered display has a resolution of just 960×540
and is about 38% transparent which can make it hard for
you to read if the colors are not really vibrant.
The concept was shown during CES 2010 In Las Vegas.

Roteburu

Roteburu is an innovative concept that hangs between
a PC and a laptop. Besides the cool desk that features a
touch-panel keyboard, it comes with a 22-inch LCD.

New footage of one of the world's last uncontacted tribes living in the Brazilian rainforest.

Jose Carlos Meirelles works for FUNAI, a government agency that protects Brazil's indigenous people. Because of the threat posed by illegal logging and mining, he believes that the fight to protect these people depends on proving and publicising their existence. This aerial footage was shot from 1km away using a stabilised zoom lens.

Brazil is thought to be home to around 70 isolated tribes.

These people are part of an unknown and uncontacted Amazon tribe living in the jungle. Look at their faces arching towards the sky in wonderment, it's so...completely refreshing. Can you imagine what they're thinking about? Updated

I can't even try to imagine their situation but I'm almost jealous of them. Their complete use of the land, building houses with palm frond roofs. Their rituals, painting their body red with annatto shrub seeds. Their world, honoring their ancestors just by living like them. It's simple, and maybe at times inconvenient, but it's also peaceful and natural. Sure, maybe they're not advancing but they live.

What are they thinking about as the overhead plane flies past them? It doesn't look like they're hostile, other pictures of uncontacted tribes show bow & arrows pointed directly at the plane. This picture catches them stunned, mouth agape, curiously pointing. Like you caught them acting, only they're not acting. I can't quite explain it, it's not exactly confusion on their faces but rather an interrupted moment mixed with a little bit of incredulity. So very amazing, nonetheless.

The pictures were taken with an overhead plane in an attempt to stop illegal logging in Peru. Kinda odd that tribal advocacy groups had to invade these tribes' privacy to protect their privacy but the groups justified it by saying:

Quote
"[It's] necessary to reaffirm that these peoples exist, so we support the use of images that prove these facts. These peoples have had their most fundamental rights, particularly their right to life, ignored … it is therefore crucial that we protect them."

Hopefully, they get protected. They look healthy and happy and that should never change. [Uncontacted Tribes via Gizmodo]
