3700 apply for Ashutosh Gowariker's 'Buddha'
PTI, May 25, 2010, 12.34pm IST

MUMBAI: A worldwide search launched last month to select the lead role in Ashutosh Gowariker's period film 'Buddha' has received an overwhelming response with as many as 3,700 registrations and over 6,000 photos and videos on its website 'buddha-movie.com'.

'Buddha' which is currently in pre-production stage, is about the journey of prince Siddhartha. The story focuses on his life and his journey to achieve enlightenment.

The movie will bring Buddha, one of the most iconic characters in history to the big screen and Gowariker is presently busy with the auditions.

"The search for the actor to play the iconic role continues. I am going through the hundreds of auditions that have come in and I must say, we are getting closer to our Buddha," director Ashutosh Gowariker said.

He said this was the first time that he had done pre-visualisation for a film.

"Producer Bhupendra Kumar Modi and co-producer Dileep Singh Rathore are leaving no stone unturned to give me technicians of my choice, that will help create 500 BC accurately on screen," Gowariker said.

"The first important decision that Modi took was to make Buddha in English. And that got me immediately interested because I have always felt that when it comes to religion, you must cater to an international audience, especially so in the case of Buddha," he added.

Kayaknya akan sedikit berbeda dari kisah kehidupan Buddha Gotama berdasarkan Tipitaka. Ini garis besar kisah kehidupan Siddharta dalam buku/novel Siddharta: The Warrior Prince (diambil dari official website-nya http://www.buddha-kyra.com/vp02.htm):

* The atmosphere in Siddhartha's palace is peaceful.
* Outside, aesthetics prevail...
* The Queen's birthday. Siddhartha wishes her many more years. Through the course of the conversation Siddhartha is reminded of his nanny -- who has become so old as to voluntarily retreat from his sight....
* As a child, Siddhartha is influenced by two teachers. The first, Aswapati, is a conservative: the other, Mahabali, is a visionary eccentric who lives alone in a huge tower in the center of a deserted city. Mahabali introduces Siddhartha to other horizons. The gates  open towards the magnificent tower where Mahabali lives. Around the tip of the tower rotates a massive circular stone wheel that depicts the Universe. Mahabali takes Siddhartha to the top of the structure from where runs a staircase to the skies. Mahabali takes Siddhartha to the top and shows him the borders that delineate the surrounding countries, the agriculture, the grazing cattle.
* After his victorious battle against the Kingdom of Kosala, Siddhartha and his countrymen visit Kosala for the Horse sacrifice. Siddhartha sees Yasodhara and falls in love. The walls of the Ceremonial Hall depict the oppressive deities of the times
* Siddhartha marries Yasodhara. They climb up to the Hanging Village -- a strange city divided by a ravine; the inhabitants know each other by sight since birth -- without ever exchanging a word. While they learn about each other, an eagle soars giving food for thought to the ever-seeking Siddhartha.
* Siddhartha travels to meet Bimbisara, the benevolent King of Magada, to ask for his support against the Kosalans. The journey takes him across vast deserts where he meets mysterious travelers.
* Weary, Siddhartha comes back from Magada to see his Kingdom savaged. His old Mentor, Aswapati sits in front of the God's alter, praying for the King's survival. The alters of the Gods were always lit: food and Soma, always available.
* As Siddhartha takes his father to the tower, where they always told each other what was on their heart, to tell him that he was going to leave and search for the Truth, the statue of Brahma comes to life and bows in support of Siddhartha's departure as his success will also release the Gods from the chain of Karma.
* As Siddhartha leaves the palace. The morning mist surrounds him, Siddhartha climbs the Himalayas in search of the Truth. After many a hardship he gets to the top, to Alara Kaluman's domain.
* His questions unanswered, Siddhartha seeks out Rudraka the Yogi, who lives in a grotto in the center of the Earth...
* Then, at last Siddhartha sits under the Bodhi tree and lives the Enlightenment.

Tapi kayanya bukan dari Kyra Pahlen aja deh. Ini salah satu wawancara dengan Bhuvan Lall, salah satu executive producer dari Buddha:

Will the book be based on ‘Old Path White Clouds,’ a novel written by Vietnamese monk Thich Nhat Hanh, in which Buddha’s life is seen through the eyes of a young buffalo boy?
BL: The rights of the book has been taken. But Buddha’s life goes much beyond one perspective. That’s what we can say at this moment.

What is the schedule for the film’s shooting and release?
BL: It will go on the floors in 2010 and be ready for release in 2011. The shooting and post-production details are being finalised right now. The location hunt is starting with the Himalayas in north India, and it will be shot in several countries.

What will be the scale of the project?
BL: The scale will be truly international. There will be nothing low cost about it. It will be the most expensive film ever to come out of India, and will tell a story from our region in a global way.

wa rasa ceritanya dari mimpi ratu mahamaya sampai mencapai penerangan sempurna di bawah pohon bodhi.
jadi wa rasa bakal ada paling sedikit 3 orang yang akan memeran kan 3 masa pada pangeran sidartha gautama. masa kecil, masa remaja dan masa dewasa sebagai pangeran suku sakya dan perjalannan nya dalam mencapai penerangan sempurna ( Buddha).

kalau sesudah nya agak ribet memerankan nya soalnya akting menjadi/mencapai arahat tuh susah, soalnya hanya ada cerita di buku belum pernah ketemu sama seseorang yang benar benar telah menjadi arahat jadi aktornya bakal susah mencapai penghayatan sebagai yang tercerahkan (Buddha atau Arahat).
