Pengembangan DhammaCitta / Status Server DhammaCitta Nov, 2010
« on: 14 November 2010, 08:22:00 PM »

Terima kasih

Indonesia's Explosive Geology Explained

Indonesia is a dangerous country to call home.

Precariously located above the grinding and mashing of several tectonic plates, and ringed by a chain of fire-breathing volcanoes, the country's islands are located in one of the most volatile regions in the world. The eruption of a volcano and the shaking of a tsunami-generating earthquake this week is just one reminder of Indonesia's fiery foundation.

As the world's largest archipelago — spread across 17,500 islands — Indonesia sits between the world's most active seismic region — the notorious Pacific Ring of Fire — and the world's second most active region — the Alpide belt. Being sandwiched between such seismicity has meant the islands experience some of the strongest earthquakes and most powerful volcanic eruptions known on Earth. [Related: Why Do Some Earthquakes Cause Tsunamis But Others Don't?]

Pacific Ring of Fire

The Pacific Ring of Fire, technically called the Circum-Pacific belt, is the world's greatest earthquake belt, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), due to its series of fault lines stretching 25,000 miles (40,000 kilometers) from Chile in the Western Hemisphere through Japan and Southeast Asia.

Earthquakes typically occur along faults, which are breaks in the rocky plates of the Earth's crust. These faults accumulate strain over the years as two plates butt heads. Roughly 90 percent of all the world's earthquakes, and 80 percent of the world's largest earthquakes, strike along the Ring of Fire. About 17 percent of the world's largest earthquakes and 5-6 percent of all quakes occur along the Alpide belt.

Indonesia feels the worst of both worlds, lying between the Pacific Ring of Fire along the northeast, and the Alpide belt along the south and west from Sumatra down to Timor.

In 2009 alone, Indonesia had 10 earthquakes greater than a magnitude-6.0, according to the USGS.

Butting heads

Monday's 7.7-magnitude earthquake that triggered a 10-foot (3-meter) tsunami, killing at least 113 people, occurred when the Australia and Sunda plates butted heads. Called thrust faulting, one rocky plate subducted or took a dive below the other, resulting in an earthquake.

Other large ruptures along the Sunda megathrust include the 9.1-magnitude 2004 quake and Indian Ocean tsunami that killed approximately 230,000 people in a dozen countries. A look beneath Indonesia would reveal lots of shifting and colliding plates. Below the country, the Eurasian Plate, Australian Plate, Indian Plate, Sunda Plate and Pacific Plate mash together.

In fact, the plate movements are also responsible for some of the most active volcanoes. For instance, the Indian Plate is subducting beneath the Eurasian continental plate, which has formed the volcanic arc in western Indonesia, home to 129 active volcanoes in Indonesia that are a part of the Ring of Fire.

The Pacific Ring of Fire is home to 452 volcanoes in total — that's 75 percent of the world's active and dormant volcanoes.

Mountain of fire

Both of Indonesia's most active volcanoes – Kelut and Mount Merapi (meaning "mountain of fire") – sit on Java Island.

And both have a history of explosive eruptions. Mount Merapi erupted today (Oct. 26), with preliminary reports of 100 people killed, according to the USGS. Merapi is located in central Java, roughly 310 miles (500 kilometers) southeast of the capital Jakarta.

Mount Merapi last erupted in 2006, killing two, but its violent history includes more than 1,300 killed in a 1930 eruption and possibly 70 killed in a 1994 eruption.

Other colossal volcanic eruptions that have occurred in Indonesia include the eruption of Krakatau, which reportedly generated the loudest sound ever heard in modern history when it exploded in 1883, killing 40,000 people. Krakatau is a volcanic island located between the islands of Java and Sumatra.

The Toba supervolcano located on the island of Sumatra, which erupted 70,000 years ago, was a global catastrophe, creating six years of volcanic winter.

Lingkungan / Homer Simpson is Catholic, Vatican paper declares
« on: 19 October 2010, 07:13:21 AM »
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – "The Simpsons" just got a blessing from the Vatican.

source: http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20101018/od_nm/us_simpsons

The official Vatican newspaper has declared that beer-swilling, doughnut-loving Homer Simpson and son Bart are Catholics -- and what's more, it says that parents should not be afraid to let their children watch "the adventures of the little guys in yellow."

"Few people know it, and he does everything to hide it. But it's true: Homer J. Simpson is Catholic", the Osservatore Romano newspaper said in an article on Sunday headlined "Homer and Bart are Catholics."

The newspaper cited a study by a Jesuit priest of a 2005 episode of the show called "The Father, the Son and the Holy Guest Star". That study concludes that "The Simpsons" is "among the few TV programs for kids in which Christian faith, religion and questions about God are recurrent themes."

The Simpsons pray before meals, and "in its own way, believes in the beyond," the newspaper quoted the Jesuit study as saying.

It's the second time the animated U.S. TV series, which is broadcast in 90 countries, has been praised by the Vatican.

But executive producer Al Jean told Entertainment Weekly on Monday he was in "shock and awe" at the latest assertion, adding that the Simpsons attend the "Presbylutheran" First Church of Springfield.

"We've pretty clearly shown that Homer is not Catholic," Jean said. "I really don't think he could go without eating meat on Fridays -- for even an hour."

In December 2009, the Osservatore Romano described the show as "tender and irreverent, scandalous and ironic, boisterous and profound, philosophical and sometimes even theological, nutty synthesis of pop culture and of the lukewarm and nihilistic American middle class."

"The Simpsons", which introduced the catch-phrase "D'oh", is the longest-running prime-time TV series in the United States and is now in its 22nd season.

Diskusi Umum / Pertapa Asita
« on: 14 October 2010, 09:05:25 PM »
Quote
Asita, also known as Kanhasiri, was a sage who lived in the forest in the Sakyan country. He is described as wearing matted hair (Sn.689). One day he noticed that the gods were wildly celebrating and he asked them why they were so happy. They replied, ‘A Bodhisattva, an excellent and incomparable jewel, has been born in the Sakyan town in Lumbini, for the welfare and happiness of the human world. This is why we are so happy.’(Sn.683). Anxious to see this child Asita went to Kapilavastu where Suddhodana welcomed him and gave him the child to hold. Being accomplished in the art of ‘signs and mantras’ (lakkhana mantra, Sn.690) he examined the baby and proclaimed that he would ‘attain complete enlightenment’ (Sambodhi), reach the ultimate purified vision’ (paramavisuddhidassi), and proclaim the Truth ‘out of compassion of the many’ (bahujamhitanukampii, Sn.693). Then tears welled up into his eyes. Noticing this and being worried by it, the Sakyans asked Asita if he had foreseen some misfortune in the boy’s future. He replied that he was sad because he knew that he would pass away before this all happened (Sn.694).
The name Asita literally means ‘not clinging’ while Kanhasiri means 'dark splendour'.
This is the only mention of Asita in the Tipitaka. According to some scholars the story about him is purely legendary and it may be. However, there is little in it that is inherently fantastic or unbelievable. It would have been quite common in ancient India for a monarch to invite a local holy man to bless and perhaps name his new-born son. Likewise, it would be normal for the holy man to ‘predict’ that the king’s son would grow up to be a great man.
Later re-tellings of the Asita story, and there are many of them, each more detailed and elaborate than the earlier ones, often say that Asita predicted than the baby prince would become either a universal monarch (cakkavattin) or a fully enlightened sage (Buddha). This ‘either or’ prediction is absent from the Tipitaka story.

Kafe Jongkok / Pak Haji Tertipu Dukun Palsu Pengganda Uang
« on: 13 October 2010, 05:51:41 AM »
http://news.okezone.com/read/2010/10/13/340/381889/pak-haji-tertipu-dukun-palsu-pengganda-uang

Sains / Frog May Teach Humans How to Regrow Limbs
« on: 30 September 2010, 08:30:44 PM »
By Maureen Salamon, MyHealthNewsDaily Contributor
posted: 28 September 2010 06:05 pm ET

People with severed limbs, spinal cord injuries and other traumatic wounds may someday be able to regrow lost nerves and tissue with the help of sodium, a new study suggests.

By using drugs to prompt a flood of sodium ions into injured nerve cells, biologists from Tufts University were able to regenerate severed tadpole tails — complex appendages containing spinal cord, muscle and other tissue. The study will be published tomorrow (Sept. 29) in the Journal of Neuroscience.

"We certainly feel this will be relevant for human medicine," said lead researcher Michael Levin, the director of the Center for Regenerative and Developmental Biology at Tufts. "The name of the game is to control the ionic content of the wound, which is able to kick-start the whole process of regeneration. You can initiate the whole cascade of repair."

Like humans, who can regrow fingertips only as children, tadpoles lose the ability to regenerate their tails with age, the researchers said. In this study, so-called refractory tadpoles, which normally cannot regrow their tails, began growing a  duplicate after an hour-long infusion of a specific combination of drugs.

The frog tail is a good model for human regeneration, Levin said, because it repairs injury in the same way, with each tissue making more of itself. Tail regeneration takes about seven days for both young and sodium-treated refractory tadpoles, he said.

It was important to note, the researchers said, that the tadpoles could regenerate their tails as late as 18 hours after amputation, after a scar-like lesion had  formed. This could have significant implications for treating wounds sustained in war, and may be applicable to many complex organs and tissues.

"You always want to get to the patient as early as possible," Levin told MyHealthNewsDaily. "The question is, how late will this work? We don’t know. My guess is that with appropriate treatment of the wound, we'll be able to kick-start regeneration."

Levin said the method breaks new ground in biomedicine because it requires no gene therapy, which attempts to cure diseases or regrow tissue by inserting normal DNA into cells.

"Without re-creating the appendage from scratch, we provide the host organism a signal to do it from scratch," Levin said. "The use of electrical signals to enhance regeneration is applicable to every species. Any organism knows what shape it should be, and it takes steps to get back to where it used to be."

Though he could not predict when, Levin said he envisions a day when people with traumatic injuries can regrow their lost parts by having them bathed in specific fluids and bioelectronics. In the case of severed arms or legs, for example, a container could be affixed over the wound to achieve this, he said.

Levin said this tissue regrowth method could be simpler and more effective than others under research, such as the use of stem cells.

"Using stem cells is like having a big box of parts," he said. "But how do you arrange stem cells into a 3-D structure? They're nowhere near ready to do that."

The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health, the National Highway Safety Administration, the Department of Defense and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.

Lingkungan / Atheists & Agnostics Beat the Religious on Religion Survey
« on: 29 September 2010, 05:54:02 AM »
Quote
On a U.S. survey of religious knowledge Atheists and agnostics did better than evangelical Protestants, mainline Protestants and Catholics on questions about the core teachings, history and leading figures of major world religions.

Overall, knowledge was thin. The average respondent got 16 of the 32 questions right.

Atheists and agnostics averaged 20.9 correct answers.
Jews and Mormons came in at 20.5 and 20.3, respectively.
Protestants: 16.
Catholics: 14.7.
The survey was conducted by the Pew Research Center’s Forum on Religion & Public Life.

What's going on?

Here's one idea: American atheists and agnostics tend to be people who grew up in a religious tradition and consciously gave it up, often after a great deal of reflection and study, said Alan Cooperman, associate director for research at the Pew Forum, in a Los Angeles Times article. "These are people who thought a lot about religion," he said. "They're not indifferent. They care about it."

koq Buddhism nda ikut di survey?
